If you are planning a trip to the Caribbean for a vacation or honeymoon, you need to know about hurricane season in the Caribbean.  If you know when hurricane season  is in the Caribbean, you can plan your trip accordingly. Hurricane season in the Caribbean is from officially from June to November. Six months out of the year is a long time, but the “prime time” for hurricanes is usually August, September and October.

So when we talk about hurricane season in the Caribbean, most locals mean the period August - October.  That is the worst time which simply means that  more than likely a hurricane will happen between August and October, but it could possibly happen earlier or later.

Unless you want to take your chances, you will probably want to plan a trip to the Caribbean between December and July.  But if you are the adventurous type and don’t mind a little excitement, then traveling during the height of hurricane season may be right for you.  To keep rooms fully, many hotels and offer huge discounts and airlines offer rock bottom rates as well.  So if you are looking for a bargain this would be the ideal time to travel.

While hurricanes are unpredictable, there are several very special islands in the Caribbean  that are below the hurricane belt, which means that  you could travel to those hurricane proof” islands at any time. Curacao is one of those islands and was rated best among all Caribbean islands on the the Dow Jones Island index.  

This means they don’t usually have hurricanes. Now it doesn’t mean that you will never see a hurricane in one of these locations, but the risk is very low.  Other islands outside the hurricane belt are Aruba, Bonaire, Trinidad, and a few other locations.

If you want to plan a trip, and you are limited to the months which fall in the hurricane season in the Caribbean, you could consider taking a cruise. The reason for this is the ships can take a different route if a hurricane is close to the area you are supposed visit.

Another option is to plan your trip to the islands but be sure to purchase hurricane protection. That way if there is a hurricane in the area you will either get a refund or you can reschedule for a different date.

Hurricane season in the Caribbean can wreak havoc when you are planning a vacation, but if you are a  Caribbean home owner it may cause you even more worries.  Make sure to keep you home insurance policy up to date and make sure to include hurricane protection in  your home insurance policy.   You can also take practical measures to protect your Caribbean home from hurricane damage by purchasing hurricane shutters and checking the roof at the beginning of hurricane season each year to make sure it is securely fastened and can withstand hurricane force winds.

Whatever you do, just don’t let the fact that the Caribbean has hurricanes scare you away from ever vacationing  or purchasing a second home in the Caribbean.  After all, the chance of getting into a car accident does not deter you from getting a driving license and purchasing a car, does it?
