There’s a saying that says “’it’s a small world” – well, it is, and it’s getting smaller thanks to the ever falling costs of flights and cruises. If you’re feeling the urge to explore your country, or even some foreign countries, why not take the leap and buy a vacation home so that you can enjoy spending some time in your dream vacation destination. There are a lot of benefits to owning a vacation home.
Considering this particular option, some people indeed opted to travel within interesting areas within their country. But people also enjoy traveling outside of their home country for vacation and when they do, the Caribbean islands are often a popular destination. As a result, the family easily starts to consider the Caribbean as a second home? The the idea of buying a vacation home in the Caribbean then comes naturally. But you may ask, where is the best place to buy a vacation home in the Caribbean?
Why Buy a Vacation Home, Not Rent?
One reason to buy a vacation home is that it gives you the chance to return to that holiday destination whenever you want. Rather than worrying about finding a hotel with a vacancy then finding the money to make the reservation, you can just fly over, or drive over, safe in the knowledge that you have a second home waiting for you when you get there. A vacation home is also useful because you can loan it out to friends and relatives. If a few of you have vacation homes in different places you could even swap them to enjoy different holiday destinations each year.
A vacation home is also a good source of income, if you have chosen a popular holiday destination. You can rent it out to other holiday makers to offset the cost of the mortgage, or perhaps turn a small profit once the mortgage is paid off.
The Best Place To Buy A Vacation Home
Being convinced that buying a vacation home is one of the best options for frequent visitors for vacation purposes, the next thing to consider is the best place to buy a vacation home. Here are some of the points needed to be considered when trying to decide on the best place to buy a vacation home.
What do your family members think the best place to buy a vacation home should be? Should it be in a mountainous region? Should it be in the middle of tall trees? Should it be located near the beach? Should it be it located near city areas where malls and other recreational areas are found? Should it be safely nestled outside of the hurricane zone?
Another important consideration is the weather. If you’re buying a vacation home you need to make sure that the weather in the area will be appealing enough that you would want to visit it a couple of times a year. There would be very little point buying a vacation home in a hurricane hot spot if you would rarely visit it, and would be having to spend money to repair it every year. According to the Dow Jones Island Index, Curacao ranks best among the Caribbean islands as a vacation destination and is one of the best places to buy a vacation home in the Caribbean.
Buying a vacation home is a big decision, and there are certain responsibilities attached to it, but it can be a great purchase, and one that will make you and your family happy for many years to come.

if I buy a vacation home in a foreign country- does financing come fromthat country or form USA? Can interest on loan be written off USA taxes if lender is from other country?

Hi Deb,
If you buy a vacation home over here, you may be able to get financing locally ( in the dutch Antilles) or in your home country (USA).
There are several local banks here that are eager to provide financing to foreigners who buy vacation homes on the island. Basically, if you qualify, you can get up to 65% financing.
You will have to check with your own tax advisers, but I do believe that interest on your non-USA loan would be deductible from your US tax.
Hope that helps!
